Starting at 3:00 p.m., your rooms will be ready at the Parkhotel St. Leonhard, located high above Überlingen. From the terraces and many of the rooms in this comfortable, first-class hotel, you can look out far across Lake Constance, which seems to stretch endlessly to the east and west. Over the next few days, you’ll not only cycle around this vast lake landscape, but you’ll also learn a great deal about the culture of this region.
At 4:00 p.m., your tour guides will welcome you at the hotel reception desk. Afterward, you’ll be driven to the city center of Überlingen to begin a guided tour of the old imperial city. Even today, you can clearly make out the contours of the medieval city, which experienced its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries. Imposing gates and walls have survived to this day. But where else can you find a ring of moats and ramparts that were, in a sense, carved out of the surrounding rock? The soft molasse rock of the hills surrounding Überlingen allowed the city’s master builders to create this unique structure. The heart of the Old Town is picturesquely clustered around “Hofstatt” Square, featuring the town hall and many Gothic stepped gables. Nearby is the Gothic St. Nicholas Cathedral. It is not only impressive from the outside but also houses treasures within. These include the works of art by the Überlingen woodcarver Jörg Zürn.
